LSTN Goes to Kibera, Kenya

We started LSTN to connect the world through sound and music. Hearing improves the lives of individuals, families, and communities around the world. The places we go are all very different, but Kibera is definitely one of the interesting places we've ever experienced. We brought our GoPro camera to give everyone a peek inside the community of one million people...

Kibera is a division of Nairobi, Kenya. It is the largest slum in Africa, and second largest in the world. In March of 2014, the LSTN team visited there with Starkey Hearing Foundation to give the gift of hearing to the community. Most of its residents lack basic needs like running water, electricity, and sanitation. Life expectancy in Kibera is estimated to be 30 years of age, compared to 54.2 years of age in the rest of Kenya. Diseases such as malaria, cholera, and typhoid afflict large proportions of Kibera residents, malaria being a major cause of hearing impairment. Despite these conditions, the people of Kibera showed hope and were happy to have the ability to hear again.
